SPILLERS
Sponsors Redwings Orphaned Foal

SPILLERS, one of the UK’s the leading horse feed manufacturers, has pledged its support for an orphaned foal in the care of Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norfolk.

Ben, a handsome bay colt, was dramatically rescued by the fire brigade in Essex in May this year when his mother became stuck in a ditch shortly after she had given birth to him. Three fire crews and a vet attended the scene but were sadly unable to save the mare, who had become trapped in deep water following a difficult birth.

No owner could be located for the mare and her now orphaned foal, so Redwings Horse Sanctuary stepped in to help. The youngster was named Ben after the Fire Service Officer who looked after him throughout the rescue efforts. He was given round the clock care, including regular bottle feeds and lots of TLC and now at five months old he’s a healthy, strapping lad.

SPILLERS will be supplying ongoing nutrition advice and all the feed that Ben needs while he’s at Redwings. Rachel Austin, SPILLERS Brand Assistant, said:

“Ben is a very special example of Redwings’ many success stories and we are so proud to be able to help him in this way. I met him for the first time back in the summer, when he was just two months old, and can confirm that he is every bit as cute and irresistible as he looks!”

Nicola Markwell, Press and Communications Manager for Redwings, said:

“Orphaned foals like Ben take a lot of work and we want to make sure he gets the best possible start in life after everything he has been through. We are so grateful to SPILLERSfor their fantastic support, which will be a great help as we continue with the care of this lovely boy!”

Breathe Wasy With WINERGY Ventil-ate

horse 4 life articleDuring the winter many horses spend much more time in the stable and this can have consequences on their airways.

The good news is that WINERGY Ventil-ate can help. It is a unique supplement that has been scientifically proven in research to support the horse’s own natural lung defences and it’s now available in a larger tub size for convenience on the yard.

In typical conditions the stabled horse will inhale approximately 12 million particles, including dust, mould allergens and irritants, with each breath.  Antioxidants are a key part of the body’s natural defences against these particles and will help to maintain healthy lungs.

Ventil-ate tub1 horse 4 life articleWINERGY Ventil-ate provides powerful nutrient support through a combination of antioxidants, including vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium. It’s beneficial to any stabled horse to support respiratory health. It can also help support horses with pollen allergies and can provide support for competition or performance horses to ensure that the lungs are functioning at maximum capacity.

Hannah Briars WINERGYnutritionist, said:

“The UK climate unfortunately means it’s unavoidable for many of us to have to stable our horses during the winter months and this can dramatically increase their chances of lung irritation. Whether your horse is a hack, companion or competition horse, anything that affects the way their lungs work can affect the way they behave or perform.”

WINERGY Ventil-ate is now available in a larger, 8.4kg tub, providing three months supply for one horse. The original 2.8kg tub is also still available.
Help your stabled horse breathe easier this winter.

You can’t rely on hay alone this winter

Research published earlier this year on hay soaking revealed the wide variability of hay used to feed horses and ponies in the UK. If some of the hays used in the study were fed as the majority of the diet they would not have provided enough protein to meet even the minimum requirements, resulting in compromised health.

The study, conducted by the WALTHAM Laminitis Consortium, used nine different hays from around the UK. Their protein content was analysed and was found to vary from 3% to 8.6%. The average was 5.87%, which if fed with no additional feed, would not meet the published protein requirement for a horse at maintenance level.

Clare Barfoot RNutr and the research and development manager at SPILLERS said:

“These findings highlight that hay alone can’t be relied upon to provide a balanced diet. It has long been recognised that mineral and vitamin levels in forage can vary and may not be sufficient to meet even the minimal requirements for horses at rest, however this research shows that protein requirements may also not be met. Unless you have every batch of hay or haylage analysed it is recommended that a suitable compound feed should also be fed to balance the diet or in the case of good doers, where extra calories are not needed, balancers are ideal, such as SPILLERS Original Balancer.”
